Really exciting

This essay is about my son's sixteenth birthday.He flew from Tonga on the morning of his birthday. He didn't want a big birthday but we suprised him.My son has been attending a bording school in Tonga for two years now.He came for on the June 28 for just three days to celebrate his birthday with the family.

Being a mother is one of the most exiting time to watch you own child growing since he was a baby.When my son left to Tonga, I couldn't stop my tears racing down my cheeks,thinking of what is gonna happened to him when he is away from me.This was the first time for him being away since he was a baby and it was so hard for me. When he first left to Tonga he was size 20 but he came on his birthday we were all surprised to see him.He lost so much weight and he went down to size 12. He looks healthier and fit which makes me and the rest of the family happy.

The celebration was held in Avondale. Our family gathered up at the hall excited to see him.He had grown up so much.The celebration was on five hours, and nobody wanted to go home.

We prepared the food for 200 hundred people, we had a lot of traditional items, performed by friends and family to keep the audience entertained. The birthday received $3000.00 from the all the present and items.

Pricida Task One

My name is Pricida and I am Tongan. English is my second language and sometimes I didn’t pay attention to the tenses and work all over the place. I made a lot of error in grammar which is the weak part of my learning. In Tonga the way we pronounce our own words is very hard compare to any other nationality and the meaning is different when we translate it to English

I find it hard to understand English when it comes to use linking words, grammar and also tenses. Because English is my second language I have tried my best to understand it and also learn how to pronounce it properly. I am more likely to use the slang before than proper English which is very important for me to start using proper English to improve that area. Any way no matter what I try my best to prove to my-self that I can do it.

Last Semester I done level two in English and I learn a lot from there which is not at the level that I really want it to be but I am happy that I am doing further study so I can learn more.

Samoan Lady die from Asthma Attack "Power Cut"

There was a lady who died from an asthma attack because her "Power was cut off". Firstly the family should have rung the "Electric Power" and advised them not to cut their power because they had a seriously sick person at home if the power is cut she would die. Secondly the Power man should have understand the situation because he had been already told by the family that they had a sick person ahd she really needed the electricity for her oxygen. Anyway both parties didn't communicate well so this lady died and there is nothing that they can do to bring back her life. Therefore we should learn from this mistake and by listening, sort out anything that we can do to help. A good result will make both parties satisfied.

Police Military beat up Tongan riot suspects

A large number of Tongans arrested after, last years riots in the capital Nukualofa were beaten up by secutity forces. Firstly there were five securities found guilty and taken to jail according "Humans Rights". They have no right at all to beat any riots. All of these persons suffered head and facial injuries. Close to 20 percent of prisoners claimed that they were handcuffed while inside prison for some periods of time. Secondly this is the first time that this propblem happen in Tonga. Even though people were flicking out but lucky community are getting together support and helps each other so everthing is fine now. In conclusion Tonga should have strong democracy to help the people and take their saing to the Parliament, so the youth will have a happy and healthy environment in the future.

The Comparison of the two Pictures

There are two ways of learning in this pictures.The first picture shows that they do drawing in the class and the second picture shows that they are sitting on the chair and more like (subject) that they are discussing about. In this pictures it shows( picture one) that are having fun, they share ideas and they work in groups. It seem they having more fun than picture two. Picture two is kind of boring. I prefer picture number one. I think that I prefer the same learning style as Children ( picture 1 ) because they wanted to have ideas first especially work together that we can see in the pictures.

Differences in manners between my country and New Zealand

I am Tongan and I would like to talk about three differences in manners between my country and New Zealand. The first one is swearing in front of your parents, sisters and brothers.

We are very strict with that behaviour. It is not allowed at all, but in New Zealand some people allowed. In Tonga wearing mini clothes is a bad taste because you offend other people around you. In my country they think that is why rape is increasing nowadays because ladies show their bodies to men. They think it is something that leads ladies to danger when they wear that kind of clothes.

Finally it is very bad to answer back to your parents or screaming at the elderly is totally disrespectful in Tonga. When I grew up we were taught that this is one of the worse manner will not exceptable. Firstly we learn from home because parents are the first teachers of manners. If they teach manners at home it will going to help the teachers a lot at school. I have seen a lot of kids here in New Zealand who answer back to their parents in a very bad way which is against my belief.

Hello everyone,

I am a Mother of four kids. I am Tongan, if you don't know Tonga we are known by the name "Friendly Island". Anyway my olders son is sixteen and he is in Tonga now, bording school at Tupou College named after the Tongan King. My second son and my two daughters are here with me but they will go school in Tonga when they turn fourteen. My husband and I planned to send the kids home so they can experience the life there and also our own culture. I have been here in New Zealand for a very long time. I came here when I was sixteen years old. My first day in New Zealand was the most unforgetable day of my life, not only that I don't understand English but also the places, people, church and everything were new and strange too. My first day at school. I knew nothing, they talked very fast and I didn't know what they were talking about.I almost gave up. After school I went home straighted to my bed room and cried. I have never stop my tears racing down my cheek thinking about my family, friends and everyone that I was close to back home. Every night I prayed to god to help me, give me strength and knowldge to be able to understand what I am doing. After three months at school, things seem to be getting better. I started to make friends and I knew for sure that was the only thing to improve my English is to mix with the students. I am talking from my experience of being away from your parents for the first time of your life, and also to a place that I have never been in my life and I feel like a stranger.

The Effects Of Globalization

The effects of globalization in Tonga

In Tonga there is some effect in golbalization now-adays.The effect of globalization is diet and health. Tonga has been increase dependence on imported foods, rather than traditional foods. In the old days they eat seafood, taro leave, lettuce and cabbage but in 1960s Pacific Nations have opened to the movement of people, idears and goods generally golbalization.People choose to consume less-healthy food because of the cost. They imported high fat- content meats, especially corned beef, mutton flaps and chicken parts dense simple carbonhydrates such as refined sugar, flour are among the main causes of the rising rates. Who has also identified in frastructure problem in health promotion, desease prevention.

The government is not strong enough to ban the importation of fatty foods. A lot of Chinesse imported their food and people find it in a very low price compare to the traditional food.Tonga diet realated diabetes, high blood pressure and heart desease are among the primary health concern.The negative consequences of dietary change with economic development, where they shift from low -fat to high quality wild meats.Other policy available would promote the development of fishing and farming industries that could make the preferred and healthier traditional foods at reduced cost. In New Zealand there is no effect of life for me because I buy Tonga food here and if I go to Tonga I can get New Zealand food too.

"Comparing the two pictures"

Picture 1 shows the lifestyle in the city. It is very high class and more light and also the development is there. The lifestyle is very high very popular and expensive too. I am not into that kind of lifestyle.

Picture 2 shows the life in the village in the old days, looks a lot cheaper than picture 1 to go shoping. This is the kind of lifestyle that I prefer (picture 2) look cheaper than picture 1, I' don't have enough money and I also can't afford to go there. I can't stand that kind of lifestyle. Picture 2 looks more affordtable to the people like me and also the people in the village.

In conclusion I believe that it depends on your backround whether you are rich or poor it is totally up to you which one you prefer. People shop depends on the quality and also different situation, like you buy shoes in the same quality from different store but the price is the only differences.

Week 9 (Oral Skill)8/5/07

My One Day Trip

I really enjoyed my one day trip in Tonga to a popular beach called Samaletani. It was the first time for me and my kids to go there except my husband because he is from the main Island of Tonga called Tongatapu and their school and church picnic always held there.

I am from the second Island of Tonga known as Vava'u so I have to catch another plane to get there.We went with my relatives and also my husbands family to the picnic. We were all looking forward to go there (Samaletani Beach), it was a very fine day and the kids enjoyed all day, swimming, playing on the sand which was very clear and white that makes them surprised.

The sea was smooth and also clear too. I met a couple from America that they have been in Tonga for three months and they love to go swimming and walking at the beach everyday.

There was something happened that day at beach. I was watching my kids swimming with some other kids and all a sudden my daughter called out for help, when I looked at her she was fine but then she said to me mum that little boy he can't swim he is drowing. I called my husband to go help the little boy.My husband brought him to the beach and he did the CPR .We were all happy to see him still alive before the amblance arrived.

Ansyway we had Roasting Pig, Yam, Taro,Raw Fish for lunch.

There were six front page stories on the radio - two on New Zealand Herald, two from the Dominion Post, one from the Press, and one from the Otago Daily Times. In the “Monday National Radio’s News Headlines”six stories were mentioned on National Radio’s News Headlines. I am interested in the first headline in New Zealand Herald, and its transcription is “The new drug trial offering hope to women with the history of miscarriages”.

I identified pronunciation features as follow:
1) Consonant to vowel linking: with/ð//ð/ the/∂/
